3dSenVR not only allows you to play classic NES games in VR, but also perfectly converts them from 2D to chunky 3D!
It may not have the most catchy of names, but 3dSenVR is a remarkable program for HTC Vive, Oculus Rift and Windows Mixed Reality that converts normal NES Roms into 3D and allows you to play them in VR. It’s very easy to use, works with normal or VR controllers and allows you to zoom in and spin the camera in any direction – you can even flip it and play from the opposite side of the screen if you like!
You can load up and play any NES rom in 3dSenVR, but to make sure the 3D works well in each game then each one requires specific settings which the devs have already worked out. The current build supports 10 games – Super Mario Bros, Donkey Kong, Tetris, Pac-Man, Legend of Kage, KungFu, Battle City 1990, Wild GunMan, Circus Charlie and Dr. Mario. Each game has its own slot on the dashboard which contains the required settings to convert it into 3D and all you have to do is click on it and select the relevant NES Rom on your hard drive.
It’s fun being able to play classic NES games in VR, but it’s the 3D conversions that really impress. The flat 2D sprites are transformed into chunky 3D blocks, making the game worlds feel more physical and allowing you to fully immerse yourself in all their retro gaming goodness. If you have a VR headset and have any interest in retro 8 bit gaming you owe it to yourself to check out 3dSenVR – a program that literally adds a whole new dimension to retro gaming.
Note: You’ll need the original Roms to play the games (Google “Vimm’s Lair”)
