A.L.F.R.E.D. is a beautiful puzzle platforming adventure with a visual style and puzzle design reminiscent of Playdead’s Inside, but with you attempting to take advantage of your overly protective robot butler’s who not only protects you from harm, but your enemies too!
In A.L.F.R.E.D. you control a young girl who’s lost in a dangerous part of the world, populated by creepy human enemies who attempt to murder her. After a short time you come across a large robotic butler named A.L.F.R.E.D. who can be used to solve a variety of puzzles and protect you from deadly hazards. A.L.F.R.E.D. is big, strong and loyal, but he does have one minor irritation – he’s programmed to protect ALL human life, not just your own – which can make dispatching your enemies particularly difficult!
You spend most of the playtime attempting to outsmart your big robotic buddy, attempting to find ways to stop him from saving the enemies you’re trying to bump off. You even start to feel sorry for A.L.F.R.E.D. – all he wants to do is save lives and he gets more and more depressed with each enemy you kill, as if he’s taking each death personally.
Taking around 15 minutes to complete, A.L.F.R.E.D. impresses with it’s gorgeous artwork and wonderfully inventive puzzle design. It’s the character design and emotion of your adorable big robot butler that sticks with you most after playing through – a loveable big lump of metal that’s only flaw is that he cares too much. Highly recommended.
