Antarctica NWYD is a beautifully animated pixel art Sci-Fi horror adventure that draws inspiration from John Carpenter’s The Thing, as you investigate a mysteriously deserted research facility in the Antarctic.
Previously featured on Alpha Beta Gamer back in 2021, in Antarctica NWYD you are a lone operative who has been sent to check up on the crew of an Antarctic research facility. The last radio communication was two weeks ago and when you get ther, you find the place abandoned and without power. After getting the generator up and running you venture deeper inside the facility and try to get to the bottom of what’s occurred there.
The current build of Antarctica NWYD takes around 40 minutes to play through and plays similarly to a classic point and click adventure game (except you have direct control of the character and there are some stealth elements. It’s a slow burn horror game so there aren’t many scary moments in the demo, but it does a great job of building atmosphere and telling its story as you traverse the doomed research facility.
There are some bugs and issues, such as text font not being very readable, not being able to pick up the rubber duckie and the fact that you have no choice about the location the game installs to. Other than that though it’s a very impressive game with gorgeous pixel art visuals and a very cinematic feel to its environments and storytelling. Highly recommended.
