Balam and the Spirits Within is a challenging and beautifully drawn 2D metroidvania that draws inspiration from Myan mythology as you attempt to bring balance back to the world.
In Balam and the Spirits Within you take control of a little masked hero who fights their way through jungles, caves, a temple and otherworldly planes to challenge the gods and restore balance back to a corrupted world. Your character is pretty agile, with the ability to dash, attack, jump and wall-jump, but you also earn new useful abilities as you progress – such as being able to wield a bomb-like orb that damages certain structures and can do some serious damage to enemies too.
The current build of Balam and the Spirits Within takes around 30 minutes to play through and features three large levels and a challenging boss fight. The levels are packed full of secrets to discover, inventive puzzles and challenging enemies to dispatch. Your bomb orb ability is particularly fun to play around with as you can knock it around like a golf ball and choose when to remotely detonate it – great for solving puzzles and dispatching enemies!
The current build of Balam and the Spirits Within which has just been released is actually from a 2018 indiecade demo build, but apparently development is still ongoing and the devs are seeking a publisher. Hopefully it does eventually see a full release as it has a lot of potential.
