Flying aficionados can now sign up to Beta test Balsa, an innovative model flight simulator from the lead developer of Kerbal Space Program, that allows you to design, build, fly all manner of weird and wonderful model aircraft.
The pleasure in model aircraft doesn’t just come from flying them, but from building them too. Balsa looks set to tap into this experience by allowing players to design and build a vast array of custom model aircraft then take them for a spin, complete missions and even face off against other players.
Balsa’s aircraft editor looks extremely impressive, allowing you to make most traditional styles of airplanes, but also allowing you to create some much more outlandish designs. It also looks easy to use, with you simply selecting parts and slotting them together, tweaking their size/direction and even adding decals and custom paint.
Balsa will feature a full single-player campaign mode, where you’ll complete challenges to earn currency and buy new parts. It’ll also have a free flight sandbox mode for a more relaxed flying experience and if you fancy something more competitive you can take part in 16 player paintball battles.
It’s a wonderfully creative take on the flight sim genre that makes a nice change from flying the same old fighter jets, bi-planes and passenger planes. Sign up for the Beta to see what weird and wonderful flying machines you can build (and crash)
