Blossom Tales: The Sleeping King is a charming, witty and well crafted The Legend of Zelda-inspired action RPG adventure in which rather than fighting your way through the Kingdom to save the Princess, you play an ass kicking Princess who fights to save the Kingdom!
Blossom Tales: The Sleeping King is a fabulous action RPG that wears its inspiration on it’s sleeve, with fondly familiar gameplay and lots of fun little in-jokes. It’s far from just a Zelda clone though – the high quality pixel art animation, vibrant game world, engaging narrative, fun secrets and witty dialogue make for a fantastic adventure that Link would be proud of.
The Beta Demo build currently has around half an hours worth of gameplay (the full game will have 15+) and it’s played out within the narration of a grandfather who is telling a bedtime story to his two grandchildren, Lily and Chrys. They’ve heard the story of a certain Elfs adventures in Hyrule too many times already, so the grandfather tells them the story of Princess/Dame/Sir Lily, who goes on an epic adventure, exploring the Kingdom of Blossom, battling her way through monster infested dungeons, collecting equipment and weaponry, solving puzzles and facing off against powerful bosses. It’s a joy to play and it’s ‘bedtime story’ method of relaying the narrative adds a lot of charm and humor to the game, making for a wonderfully lighthearted and heartwarming experience.
We look forward to seeing more of Blossom Tales: The Sleeping King as it’s shaping up to be a superb old school action RPG with lots of heart. A fantastic love letter to The Legend of Zelda that actually manages to surpass it in many ways. It’s also quite nice to see a Princess who doesn’t need rescuing for a change!
Note: When you first load up the game it may be in French. It’s easy enough to change the dialogue in the options menu though (watch the beginning of this video if you have any trouble)
