Captain Photon and the Planet of Chaos is a short and action packed run n’ gun arcade shooter that draws inspiration from Contra and Cuphead as you blast your way through a Flash Gordon-esque pulp Sci-Fi alien land.
The gameplay in Captain Photon and the Planet of Chaos will feel immediately familiar to anyone who’s played Contra, with you running and shooting constant streams of spawning aliens. The power-ups you collect are pretty much the same as in Contra too, although you can press a button to stop moving, allowing you to stand still and fire in different directions (much like in Cuphead).
It was created for a game jam so it’s pretty short, but Captain Photon and the Planet of Chaos packs a lot of action into its 5-10 minute play time. There’s three bosses to battle, a nice variety of power-ups and huge swarms of enemies to deal with. It’s perhaps not as polished as Contra or Cuphead, so you can cheese some of the bosses, but it is a lot of fun and it’s got a fantastic 50’s pulp Sci-Fi visual style. Well worth checking out for a short and intense dose of alien robot blasting fun!
