Cato is an inventive little puzzle platformer based around the Buttered Cat Paradox, where a cat with buttered toast on its back results in anti-gravity.
Everybody knows that cats always land on their feet and buttered toast always lands butter side down. So what happens if you attach a slice of buttered toast to the back of a cat? You for a “Cato” – a physics-defying paradox that causes the cat and toast to revolve and enter a state of anti-gravity. You need to use this principle to help you make your way through a series of cleverly crafted puzzle levels and escape to freedom.
Created for the BOOOM game jam, in Cato you control the cat with the arrow keys and the toast with the spacebar and shift buttons. The cat can walk but not jump and the toast can jump and wall-jump. Both can activate different switches and if you manage to combine them then you can tap jump repeatedly to levitate through the air.
Taking around 15 minutes to play through, it’s a great little game with beautiful pixel art visuals, a delightful silly premise and a nice selection of cleverly crafted levels. It would be nice to see it expanded on in the future as the premise has a lot of promise and the toast and the cat make a very charming combo of characters. Highly recommended.
