Contra: Operation Galuga is a reimagining of the original Contra game, which brings new stages, new enemies and 4 player co-op to the classic run ‘n gun gameplay.
First thing’s first, Contra: Operation Galuga isn’t the best looking game and it lacks the pixel art charm of the originals, but the gameplay can be a lot of fun. The demo features a story mode where you’ll occasionally be accompanied by a buddy who will hang around, shoot enemies and chat for a while (with full voice acting). Meanwhile the arcade mode is more like a traditional Contra game, with you blasting your way through the enemies solo, or with up to three other players in co-op
The core gameplay is much like the original, with you able to run, gun and collect and switch between two different weapons at a time. There are some concessions to modern gaming audiences (checkpoints, no instadeath, perks) and an interesting new feature allows you to sacrifice a weapon to unleash a powerful attack.
It definitely feels like a more casual experience than traditional Contra games, but it’s an entertaining bit of run ‘n gun fun. If you’re looking for something closer to the original you’ll be better off with Wild Dogs or Iron Meat, but if you’re looking for a bit of retro arcade run ‘n gun action you can play with some buddies then it’s certainly worth checking out Contra: Operation Galuga.
