Crossing Souls is a fabulous action adventure steeped in 80’s nostalgia that sees you taking a band of Goonies-style misfits on an epic sci-fi adventure, using each characters special skills to solve puzzles, kick ass and save the world!
The current demo build of Crossing Souls features around an hours worth of gameplay and introduces players to the Goonies-esque gang of friends and the Incredibly detailed 80’s world they live in. The world is packed full of 80’s references and great humor, with nods to the likes of Back to the Future, Ghostbusters, Big, Stand By Me and E.T. (even lesser known ‘classics’ like Critters and Cobra get a look in). Even the cutscenes draw inspiration from the 80’s, with hand animated scenes that look just like something out of a classic Saturday morning cartoon.
In the game you take control of a gang of heroes (Chris, Matt, Charlie, Big Joe and Kevin), each of which you can switch between at the press of a button. Each character has unique special skills, such as Big Joe’s ability to move heavy objects and Matt’s knack for gadgetry, each of which you will have to utilize on your adventure. They’re a likeable group, all of which bring something unique to the gang and to the gameplay.
The 80’s references in Crossing Souls really are too numerous to mention, but needless to say it does a great job of world building and upping the nostalgia value. It’s not just a bunch of 80’s references though, it backs up the nostalgia with some great gameplay, quirky characters, witty humor and an intriguing narrative. An excellent adventure that takes you back in time faster than a plutonium powered Delorean.
