Crowfall is an ambitious player driven massively multiplayer role playing ‘Throne War Simulator’ in which every world within it is different, featuring unique maps, rules and victory conditions, with factions fighting for control of them using a mixture of politics, strategy and combat.
A little like Game of Thrones, Crowfall offers mature fantasy on a massive scale, set in a world where monsters roam, but it’s the other player factions that are the real threat. In the game there are five systems of worlds, each with different rule sets and populated by procedurally generated planets that only last for four seasons (Spring, Summer, Fall and Winter) until they are gone forever.
In real time these planets can last between a month and a year, during which time players use a mixture of exploration, resource gathering, settlement building, questing, siege warfare and combat as they attempt to reach the worlds victory conditions. The main threat comes from the other factions, but you can also go out on raids and quests for some PvE action that can help you stockpile weapons, equipment and resources that will come in handy when Winter comes.
Crowfall is still only in the Alpha stages of development and has already garnered a player base of almost two hundred thousand and funding that exceeds twelve million dollars. It’s an impressive game that offers a refreshing take on the MMORPG genre, with it allowing players to forge their own stories instead of just going through a series of linear quests. It’s currently in Alpha, which is only open to players who purchase the Early Access Pledge Passes, but when it goes into Beta it will open up to more players, without the need for a pass.
