Dap is a beautiful, creepy and delightful top-down pixel art horror action adventure where you gather little buddies to aid you as you make your way through a dark, infected world.
In Dap you take control of a little humanoid creature called a Dap. You start the game locked up in a cell, but you are soon released by one of your kind and embark on an adventure through a beautiful magical world that’s been infected with a dark corruption.
You have a melee attack and a ranged attack, but you won’t get far through the world on your own as freaky monsters lurk in the darkness and you often require to press multiple pressure pads simultaneously to open gates. Thankfully though you can rescue and befriend other Daps along the way, who will follow you, dramatically increase your firepower and allow you to open gates. A little like the Oddworld Abe’s Odyssey/Exodus games, your interactions with them are fairly limited, but they really come in handy and you become invested in trying to save as many as possible.
The Dap Alpha demo build takes around 45 minutes to play through and is a fascinating experience from start to finish. There’s lots to discover and it doesn’t hold your hand, instead allowing you to figure out how the mysterious magical land works yourself. The pixel art animation is fantastic throughout and the little Daps are very endearing – particularly the little noises they make when you talk to them. Highly recommended.
