We first covered Dark Deception almost a year ago and found it to be “the creepiest, freakiest Pac-Man game you’re likely to play”. A lot has changed since then, and the game has had a significant graphical and audio overhaul, but those sinister Murder Monkeys are still there, lurking behind every corner, ready to scare the living daylights out of you.
For those unaware, Dark Decepion is essentially first-person Pac-Man set in a creepy hotel, but instead of being chased by cute little ghosts, you’re chased by all manner of freaky creatures, from demonic clowns to some psychotic monkeys. Levels are procedurally generated, and the creatures roam the creepy hallways in the same semi-random manner as the Pac-Man ghosts, so you’ll never know what’s around the next corner.
As well as a complete graphical overhaul, Dark Deception now features music from Jake Kaufman (Shovel Knight, Contra 4, Bloodrayne: Betrayal), writing by Mike Lee (Ghost Recon, HAWX, End War Online) and voice acting from voice acting by Carolyn Seymour (Myrrah from Gears of War, Dr. Chakwas from Mass Effect). The Alpha Demo features standard screen or Oculus Rift support, and the first level of the game in which you’ll be able to meet up with those horrible Murder Monkeys again. The full game will feature several levels with distinct settings, monsters, music, and behavior, as well as special abilities and hazards to spice up the gameplay.
Dark Deception is still the creepiest, freakiest Pac-Man game you’re likely to play, but now it’s that bit freakier.
