Dark Devotion is a beautifully animated 2D action RPG with roguelike elements, in which you play a girl who’s attempting to escape a temple filled with darkness and despair.
There’s a Dark Soulsian influence to the exploration and combat in Dark Devotion, with its religious undertones, a Souls-esque currency system and tactical combat that requires timing and management of your stamina bar. Each playthrough with take you on different routes through the temple, with you meeting NPC’s, battling deadly enemies, collecting loot to kit out your character, fighting powerful bosses and unraveling the complex story behind the temple.
As you progress the enemies that you slay will earn you Devotion that can be used to unlock doors and chests. You can switch weapons on the fly, which will come in handy as different enemies require different tactics. You also have to be careful to maintain your weapons and treat your injuries – delays to either can mean much more trouble, causing sickness and weapon malfunctions. You’ll have to be careful too – Dark Devotion features roguelike elements that will really punish you. Unless you reach one of the scarce checkpoints, death means you’ll go right back to square one and lose all your equipment. You can unlock some permanent upgrades though by using the Faith you have gathered on your run through.
It’s a great looking game, with high quality pixel art animation, tactical combat and an intriguing game world packed full of horrors, secrets and mystery. The Kickstarter is due to start in August, but you can sign up for the Beta now, testers who are selected will be notified this coming Monday!
