Dark Future: Blood Red States is a roguelike car combat strategy game based on the Dark Future tabletop game by Games Workshop, where you use a V.A.T.S-esque system to slow down time and issue commands to your vehicle as you attempt to survive in a dystopian alternate future.
Although it looks like a Twisted Metal style car combat game, Dark Future: Blood Red States is actually a roguelike real time strategy game. You don’t have direct control of your car, instead you issue commands to it as you hurtle along the highways completing run-based campaigns in a dystopian alternate America.
You can choose the speed your vehicle travels at and the lane of the highway that it will drive along, and your car will aim to follow those orders, even while under heavy fire. When you do encounter any hostile vehicles you can enter “RealTimeShift” mode (similar to Fallout’s V.A.T.S. system), which slows the gameplay down to a crawl and allows you to issue commands to your vehicle – using your offensive and defensive capabilities to turn your enemies’ vehicles into smouldering wrecks.
Dark Future: Blood Red States features eight stories spread across challenging roguelike campaigns. As you progress you’ll be able to upgrade your vehicles weapons and defenses, and you can even hire other vehicles to roll with you. You’ll want to be careful though – the roads are dangerous and perma-death means you can easily lose everything if you make silly mistakes.
It’s a very promising game that looks set to take one of Games Workshop’s lesser known tabletop games and use it to deliver a strategic twist on the vehicular combat genre. The Dark Future: Blood Red States Beta is due to take part from the 11th to the 14th of April, and if you fill in the feedback form afterward then you’ll receive an extra 5% off the full price of the game.
