DeathBulge: Battle of the Bands is a lighthearted musical RPG adventure where you explore a magical forest full of super-buff enemies and recruit band members to help you win a cursed battle of the bands.
Drawing inspiration from Final Fantasy, Earthbound and Toejam & Earl, DeathBulge: Battle of the Bands offers a fun twist on the traditional turn based RPG adventure as you use musical instruments to duel your way through its wonderfully whimsical cartoon world. In the game you take control of Faye, a young guitarist who must recruit her band members and prepare for an upcoming battle of the bands, which is cursed and only the winners will survive.
The current DeathBulge Kickstarter demo features a sizeable chunk of gameplay that takes at least 30 minutes to play through. You explore DeathBulge’s beautifully drawn cartoony world meet strange characters, discover secrets, recruit a band member and battle a variety of buff enemies.
Thankfully there are no random encounters – so for the most part you walk up to an enemy to fight them. The combat is turn based, with each side having timer bars which not only dictate when players can perform actions, but can also be buffed and debuffed with a variety of musical spells. There’s a nice variety of actions you can perform in battle and you can alter your abilities by applying mods that you unlock through play.
Even in these early stages of development DeathBulge is shaping up to be a fantastic RPG adventure with plenty of character and a great sense of humor. It’s a joy exploring DeathBulge’s charming cartoony world, listening to it’s excellent soundtrack, meeting its quirky inhabitants and battling weird foes. An RPG adventure that’s more about having fun than grinding and stats. Highly recommended.
