Deff is a fast paced puzzle action platforming adventure that sees you taking control of a wheelchair-bound Death as he sets out for revenge against those who tried to kill him.
We first featured Deff on Alpha Beta Gamer last year https://www.alphabetagamer.com/deff-game-jam-build-download/ when it was a game jam prototype and were very impressed with it’s fun narrative, challenging gameplay and clever level design. The new Alpha builds on the original significantly, with improved pixel art animation, more diverse puzzles, collectibles and more types of enemy to deal with. It sees you taking control of Deff (Death), who ends up wheelchair-bound after a botched assassination attempt and sets out for revenge.
You may be wheelchair-bound but you’re far from helpless. You can’t jump, but you can wheel yourself left and right, and you have a nifty ability to dash and slash at certain objects and enemies. As long as you have line-of-sight to the target there’s no limit to the distance of the dash attack and you can use it to traverse the game world, kill enemies and avoid hazards. You’ll also collect the ability to slow down time, which can come in handy when timing is of the essence or you need to pass through an electrical barrier.
Even in its current Alpha form Deff is a very well crafted experience. The pixel art animation is superb (particularly the excellent opening cutscene), the controls are tight, the dash attack ability is great fun to use and the level design is fantastic. A wheelchair-bound puzzle action platforming adventure that’ll test your grey matter and your reflexes. Highly recommended.
