Demoniaca: Everlasting Night is a super tough gothic metroidvania with skill based combo-filled combat inspired by The King of Fighters series that sees you fighting your way through a demonic Babel Tower.
In Demoniaca: Everlasting Night you play a girl who has barely survived after being used as a human sacrifice to aid demons raising another Tower of Babel. She wake up on a pile of corpses finding that she’s acquired inhuman powers after her blood has been tainted with that of the demons. She then sews up her mangled body and sets out for vengeance.
Demoniaca: Everlasting Night is very much a metroidvania at heart, with you exploring a large open world, collecting loot, levelling up, discovering lots of secret areas and acquiring new abilities. The combat and character animation is more akin to The King of Fighters 2D fighting games though, complete with cool combos and special moves. It’s a novel approach that has the potential to make encounters with enemies more reliant on skill than stats (unlike a lot of other metroidvanias).
It’s still early in development so has a few rough edges that can infuriate – most noticeable is the inability to climb ledges and the large knockback effect when you receive damage. If you’re trying to make it through a platforming section if can be particularly infuriating as you’re totally vulnerable while in the air. The full game will allow players to unlock new skills which may (hopefully) address this issue, but at the moment it can feel quite unfair at times. Nevertheless, every jump is makable – you just need precision and careful timing, as you can observe in the developers playthrough.
Other than the niggles with the platforming, Demoniaca: Everlasting Night a very impressive game, with stylish pixel art visuals, a great sense of atmosphere and a unique fighter-style combat system that adds a fresh twist to the metroidvania genre. A super challenging, stylish and skill based metroidvania well worth checking out.
