In Despelote you are a young kid who lives in the town of Quito, Ecuador in 2001. Around this time Ecuador were very close to qualifying for their very first World Cup, and football fever struck the nation. Your parents are mad about football, your friends are mad about football, pretty much everyone in Ecuador is mad about football. So as you go about your day at school, in the town and at home football permeates everything.
The demo features a large chunk of gameplay and really impresses with its striking visual style and beautiful storytelling. A real highlight is the first person football mechanics where you can dribble the ball and then swing the mouse to kick it. There’s a real playfulness to the world and it feels like a wonderfully wholesome place to immerse yourself in, especially with everyone buzzing about Ecuador’s World Cup chances. If you’re looking for a joyful and hopeful place to get lost in, this is it. Highly recommended.
