Dreamscaper is a beautiful and surreal roguelite hack n’ slash adventure adventure where you enter your subconscious and battle the manifestations of your negative thoughts.
Previously featured on Alpha Beta Gamer during the closed Alpha sign up, in Dreamscaper you take on the role of a young woman who is must defeat her nightmares to save herself from a dark fate. Each time she goes to sleep she enters a different procedurally generated dungeon built in her subconscious, filled with nightmarish manifestations of her most negative emotions.
The dungeon design of Dreamscaper draws inspiration from The Binding of Isaac, with each individual room containing a random mixture of loot and/or enemies to dispatch. The combat is more akin to a traditional hack n’ slash action game though, with you able to use melee weapons, dodges, shields and projectiles. It features permadeath, so if you die then you’re right back at the start, but you can permanently unlock some useful weapony that can aid your adventures.
Even in these early stages of development, Dreamscaper delivers a highly polished experience. The combat is satisfyingly tactical, the dungeons are challenging and the visuals are beautiful. You may be trapped in your subconscious battling dark monsters, but it’s one hell of a beautiful nightmare!
