E.M.P. is a stylish and atmospheric adventure game in which you help an unknown protagonist build a mysterious device in a world that’s rapidly running out of power.
Initially there’s very little backstory in E.M.P., you just now that you’re a fugitive on the run from someone and that you need to locate some specific key items before you can confront them – you don’t find out much more until later on. You break into a house via the skylight then start your search for the items you need, but it’s not going to be easy.
E.M.P. plays a little like a classic point and click adventure, but you only have a limited power supply which you use to operate the various electrical objects in the house. You need to figure out which electrical objects to use in the correct circumstances to allow you to access your key items. As you’re working with such a limited power supply, you can’t just combine things blindly – you have to think about what you’re doing.
The power management mechanic of E.M.P. is a nice touch, but it’s the quality of the pixel artwork and moody audio that really impress the most – helping to build a tense and sinister atmosphere as you creep around the house in the darkness, worried that those that are hunting you will find you before you’ve assembled your equipment. A well crafted little adventure with a great sense of atmosphere. Highly recommended.
