Effigy is a fast paced 90’s styled first person shooter with Sci-Fi, horror and metroidvania elements as you explore a vast interconnected prison colony
When you initially clap eyes on Effigy, you instantly think of classic 90’s shooters like Doom and Quake, but Effigy is a little less focused on bombastic run n’ gun action and more about exploration. In fact it may share more in common with the Metroid Prime games than Id’s classics.
The current build of Effigy takes around 45 minutes to play through and features a sizeable chunk of the game world to explore. The guns don’t feel quite as good as doom but the combat is fun, there’s plenty of secrets to discover and the world is a fascinating place to explore.
It’s a great game that delivers a more cerebral and exploration focused take on the 90’s FPS. What’s most impressive is the architecture and the sheer enormity of the world and the structures within it. A lot of it feels like it was built for giants who are no longer around (or at least you hope they’re no longer around) and it gives you a real feeling of awe as you blast your way through the world. Highly recommended.
