En Garde! is a very entertaining swashbuckling action game with skill-based fencing combat with the ability to use lots of environmental objects to your advantage.
Previously featured on Alpha Beta Gamer back in 2018 when it was a student project game, En Garde! is now being developed into a full game. In the game you’ll follow the adventure of a legendary young swashbuckler who fights back against the tyrannical Count Duke in 17th century Spain.
The gameplay in En Garde! is a little like Assassin’s Creed, with fluid parkour mechanics and melee focused combat. The combat is faster and more responsive though and there’s a big focus on using the environment to your advantage (kicking enemies into weapon racks, kicking crates at them, etc). It’s a very playful game too, with a mixture of wise-cracking and swashbuckling that feels akin to the classic The Mask of Zorro movies.
It could perhaps do with dialling down the health on some of the tankier enemies, but aside from that En Garde! is shaping up to be a superb swordfighting adventure. The combat is a real delight and the wholesome matinee adventure vibes make for a refreshing change from the likes of Assassin’s Creed. Highly recommended.
