Exit Limbo: Opening is a very weird and brutal side scrolling beat ‘em up adventure where an anthropomorphic rhino helps a clan of rats as he fights his way through hordes of mutant zombified animals after waking up in an alternate reality.
You may think you know what to expect from a retro side-scrolling beat ‘em up, but Exit Limbo: Opening really does defy all expectations. It is a side-scrolling beat ‘em up, but it’s also so much more, with horror, platforming, parkour and adventure elements, as well as an elaborate fighting system with brutal combos and Street Fighter-esque special moves. And there’s also the fact that it’s bat shit crazy…
Exit Limbo: Opening opens with your character (Mr. Rhino) waking up after a train crash, in an alternate reality that contains a nightmarish version of your hometown that’s overrun with anthropomorphic zombie monsters. From there on in, you’ll fight, run, jump and roll your way through the strange world, befriend a clan of Splinter-esque rats and beat up some big bosses along the way.
The visual style of Exit Limbo: Opening is a little strange and feels like what would happen if someone did hyper realistic versions of the baddies in Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. It is a little jarring at first but it does grow on you as you play and it makes for a very visceral experience when the combat is in full swing. The fighting is a lot of fun (especially once you unlock your special moves) and there’s a nice mixture of different gameplay elements in there too. It’s full of interesting ideas and fun twists on the traditional side-scrolling beat ‘em up and you never know what to expect next. Highly recommended.
