Exophobia is a fast paced retro styled FPS that draws on classics like Wolfenstein 3D and Doom, as you blast your way through a spaceship that crash landed on an alien planet.
In Exophobia you awaken in your ship surrounded by the dead bodies of your crew after your ship crash-landed on a hostile alien planet. You’re not alone though – you have a handy upgradeable alien gun and a ship full of aliens to blast with it!
Gameplay-wise Exophobia most resembles the Wolfenstein 3D era of FPS gaming, with fast paced run n’ gun action with a locked vertical axis (so you don’t look up or down). Your gun has infinite ammo, but you can only take a few hits before you die, so you need to be careful. There are secret areas to discover with health upgrades though and you have a nifty slide/dash that can not only get you out of trouble, but can daze enemies for a couple of seconds.
The current demo build of Exophobia takes around 15 minutes to play through and delivers a great little slice of retro run ‘n gun FPS action. The labyrinthine spacecraft is well designed and requires a little puzzle solving to find the secret areas. There’s a nice mixture of enemies to fight, each requiring different tactics to defeat and the end boss puts up a good fight. The retro sprite-based pixel art style works well and the soundtrack is fantastic. Highly recommended.
