Expedition is a very tense Lovecraft inspired first person horror game where you attempt to sneak past huge bald penguin monsters as you follow the trail of an expedition that ended in disaster.
Created by students at Technocité Mons in Belgium, Expedition is a very tense and atmospheric first person horror adventure that draws inspiration from At the Mountains of Madness by H.P. Lovecraft. In the game you take control of an explorer who has set out in search of answers about an expedition deep into the heart of a mountain range, which occurred a couple of years ago in 1931 and ended in disaster. There’s only one living survivor of that expedition and he’s gone insane – so naturally you decide to check it out for yourself!
Taking around 20 minutes to play through, Expedition is a very well crafted horror adventure with some excellent monster design, an interesting narrative and a fairly forgiving take on stealth gameplay. Horror games where you carry your own light source can be a real irritation as you try to peer through the gloom, but Expedition gets it right, with a nice amount of environmental lighting, a decent amount of light cast and no real fear of running out of fuel. There are times when you may not want such a great view though – the big bald cave-dwelling penguin monsters are surprisingly terrifying! Highly recommended.
