Ghostrunner is a ridiculously cool and extremely brutal Mirror’s Edge-eque parkour action game where you run, swing, slide and slice your way through a vast cyberpunk city.
Currently in joint development by One More Level (creators of God’s Trigger) and Slipgate Ironworks (creators of Rad Rodgers and Bombshell), and produced by 3D Realms (Creators of Shadow Warrior and Duke Nukem 3D), Ghostrunner sees you slicing up enemies as you parkour your way through a huge cyberpunk tower-city. The city houses the rementants of humanity who survived a cataclysmic event and was created by The Architect, who died mysteriously several years ago. It’s now ruled through the iron grip of The Keymaster and people’s worth is determined by what implants they have. It’s only a matter of time until a rebellion starts and you will play an integral part in it.
The action parkour platforming gameplay of Ghostrunner is fast, fluid and a whole lot of fun. The obvious touchstone of first person parkour platforming is Mirror’s Edge, but Ghostrunner makes Faith’s adventures feel rather cumbersome in comparison. As well as being able to run, slide and wall-jump, you can use an air dash, swing with a grappling beam and use a slow motion ability to strafe around bullets while in the air. This slow-mo strafe ability is particularly handy and allows you to get up nice and close to your enemies before you slice them to pieces with your sword – which is delightfully gory.
The current demo build of Ghostrunner takes around 15 minutes to play through and it’s an adrenaline-fuelled thrill ride from start to finish. The visuals are gorgeous, the dystopian cyberpunk world is a fascinating place to explore and the gameplay is a blast. A fantastic wall-running sword-swinging grapple-swinging cyberpunk action adventure that brings the gore to parkour! Highly recommended.
