GHOSTWARE: Arena of the Dead is a narrative-driven FPS that takes place within a long-dead Unreal Tournament style 90’s arena shooter that a mysterious wizard is trying to revive.
In GHOSTWARE: Arena of the Dead you step into the shoes of Molly, a once-dead protagonist who has been revived by a wizard with a fondness for retro 90’s arena shooters. The wizard hasn’t only revived you, but also a bunch of other players, and given you all avatars in a long-dead multiplayer arena shooter. You’ll now compete in Deathmatches, King of the Kill and Capture the Flag modes as the wizard tries to revive the 90’s arena shooter genre. However, the wizard’s magic threatens to thin the boundaries between the arena shooter and the real world and there’s more to the abandoned maps of GHOSTWARE than first meet the eye.
At the moment GHOSTWARE: Arena of the Dead could do with incorporating a little more “show, don’t tell” design philosophy as it’s a little text heavy at the moment. It could also do with a little more speed (as well as a run button) and some more brutal frags if it wants to capture the vibe of a classic 90’s shooter. That said, it’s a fantastic concept, the retro visuals work well, it’s fun hunting for hidden secrets in the abandoned maps and there are some clever twists to the gameplay. It’s got a lot of potential and looks set to take you on a very interesting journey.
