Heidelberg 1693 is a brutal 2D action adventure which sees a musketeer slicing and shooting his way through the zombie-infested streets of 17th century Heidelberg, Germany.
Previously featured on Alpha Beta Gamer last year, Heidelberg is a beautifully animated 2D action game that hearkens back to the days of Ghouls ‘N Ghosts and the early Castlevania games. In the game you step into the shoes of a musketeer who sets out to slay the Moonking – a relative of King Louis XIV who has raised an undead army to steal the throne. The current build is quite a bit shorter than the last one, but the quality of the gameplay and animation is a step up.
The current build of Heidelberg 1693 can be completed in under 10 minutes, but it’ll most likely take much longer than that because it’s one hell of a tough game. You really need your wits about you as you have very limited health and if you get shot by a gun then it’s instant death. Your musketeer is pretty agile and he has a musket that he can use for ranged attacks – however, it takes a long time to reload so it’s best saved for when you really need it!
It is a very tough game, but Heidelberg 1693 is also a hell of a lot of fun. The animation and sound design are superb, with lots of brutal deaths and chilling screams permeating the air. One particularly nice touch is that enemies can harm each-other with their attacks (which can be a big help) and the musket may take a long time to load, but it sure feels great to shoot! Highly recommended.
