Beta sign ups are now live for Hidden Deep, a fantastic physics-based survival horror set within a labyrinthine sub-oceanic research facility that’s home to grotesque shapeshifting alien lifeforms.
Previously featured on Alpha Beta Gamer last year, Hidden Deep is a wonderfully brutal physics-based spellunking horror game that draws inspiration from The Thing, Aliens and Half-Life. In the game you’re sent on missions within a sub-oceanic research facility that appears to have dug up something best left buried. You have been sent in to investigate after contact was lost with the facility, and now it appears that it’s overrun with a variety of grotesque alien monsters – some of which can shapeshift like in The Thing.
As terrifying as the monsters are in Hidden Deep, there’s a good chance that the majority of your deaths will be due to your incompetence. The labyrinthine tunnels of the facility are filled with hazards and huge drops – often resulting in a hilariously brutal death as your body lifelessly bounces off rocks. The key is to use a little caution and use the various tools you’re equipped with, such as a scanner orb and a very handy grappling hook.
It’s a fantastic game with some excellent climbing/swinging/falling physics, large complex levels and a narrative and monsters that draw from Sci-Fi horror greats. There’s a real danger to everything you do in Hidden Deep and although you’ll die often, it’s hard not to laugh at the brutality of it all when you do!
