Hourglass is a beautiful, chilled out first person puzzle platforming adventure where you work alongside previous recordings of yourself to solve puzzles in a mysterious ancient world.
Drawing inspiration from Portal, The Witness and Rime, in Hourglass you take on the role of a young adventurer whose archaeologist father has gone missing in Egypt. After tracking down his last location you discover a mysterious ancient temple which contains advanced time manipulation technologies and portals to floating islands.
The core gameplay mechanic in Hourglass is your ability to create a recording of yourself which you can then work alongside to solve the various puzzles in the temple. The recording only lasts for a few seconds, but it has a lot of uses, such as activating switches and moving boxes.
The Hourglass Kickstarter demo features around 30 minutes of gameplay and really impresses with its beautiful visuals and creative puzzle design. The time manipulation mechanics are intuitive and the final puzzle is particularly devious, requiring you to really think outside of the box.
Even in these early stages of development Hourglass is shaping up to be an excellent puzzle adventure that could stand shoulder to shoulder with the great games it draws inspiration from. The beautiful, vibrant game world is a very pleasant place to spend time in and the time-bending puzzles are remarkably inventive. Highly recommended.
