Impasto is a beautiful painterly stealth horror adventure set within a twisted world painted by the tormented Spanish artist Francisco Goya.
Currently in development by a group of students from the University of Southern California, Otis College of Art and Design and California State University, Impasto puts you in the shoes of Francisco Goya’s grandson as he ventures into his grandfather’s dark and twisted painted world. Now blind and near death, Francisco Goya has bequeathed his manor to his grandson Mariano.
As Mariano explores the manor he can hear whispers coming from the paintings, but one of them transports him into a painted world filled with his grandfather’s darkest creations. To escape he’ll need to find two music pages and bring them to a blind musician. But the church’s inquisition members roam the street and will purge anyone who doesn’t belong (which means you!). You’ll need to use stealth as you explore the world, solve puzzles, discover dark secrets and hopefully bring a little light to its nightmarish streets.
Impasto is still in development so there are a few little rough edges, but it’s a fantastic little adventure that tells a poignant story and gives you a better appreciation for some of Goya’s most famous artworks. The voice acting is excellent, the stealth mechanics work well (and are fairly forgiving) and the painterly art style is absolutely stunning. You really do feel like you’ve been transported into one of Goya’s tortured masterpieces and although it’s a dark and twisted place, it’s beauty makes you never want to leave. Highly recommended.
