INITEN is a beautiful non-combative Journey-esque third person adventure where you collect sounds from the environment and use them to bring life back to a barren land.
In INITEN you control Abuchi, a being who can capture sounds and transform them into a life energy that nourishes the world around her. She has found a plant seedling that could help bring life back to the barren desert land, but first she needs to find a suitable place to plant it.
As you make your way through the desert world in INITEN you can capture nearby sounds which will then trail behind you as you walk. The more sounds that trail you the further your character can glide through the air (allowing you to overcome obstacles), but you can also use them to bring life to the world.
You can revive patches of grass and even bulbous plants that give out a chime when you hit them. The bulbous plants are usually found in groups and if you hit them in the correct order (listen to the background music for a hint on what order) then a larger plant will grow which you can harvest a sound from. As you explore there are lots of other little secrets to find and discover – most of it is optional, but it’s fun to explore, experiment and bring life back to the world.
Taking around 30 minutes to play through, spreading life throughout the musical world of INITEN is an absolute delight. The visuals are vibrant, the gameplay is wonderfully chilled out and the game world is full of interesting things to discover. Highly recommended.
