Iron Meat is a fantastic side scrolling retro action platformer that’s essentially the Contra sequel you’ve always wanted.
Previously featured on Alpha Beta Gamer back in 2019, Iron Meat is a Contra inspired action platformer set in a dark future where a ravenous meat organism has infested the world. It absorbs people and repurposes them, turning them into grotesque abominations of flesh and steel. It’s up to you to fight back and turn the freaky monster hordes into dead meat.
Playable in single-player or local co-op, Iron Meat plays pretty much exactly like the classic Contra games. Or to be more accurate, Iron Meat plays exactly like you REMEMBER the Contra games did – because in actual fact, it actually plays a lot better than the Konami’s arcade classics do now.
The current build of Iron Meat features three full levels, complete with mini-bosses and end of level boss fights. The gameplay is fast, fun and challenging, with a nice selection of power-ups to use and enemies to dispatch. You can fire in eight directions while moving and you can hold the Right Trigger to stand still and aim. It’s possible to carry two weapon power-ups at a time and if you collect two of the same type then you get an upgraded version of that weapon.
It really does have everything you could possibly ask for in a new Contra game and it’s very unlikely that Konami themselves could do any better. The gameplay is challenging but fair, the action is non-stop and the enemies and boss fights have plenty of variety. Highly recommended.
