Kova is a slick, stylish and very atmospheric sci-fi Metroidvania RPG adventure in which you play a mercenary who discovers a strange beacon that may unravel the Fermi Paradox and finally give an answer to the question – why have humans been left alone in the Universe?
Kova is set in a distant, technologically advanced future where mankind has explored galaxies and colonised planets but has inexplicably still not come across any forms of intelligent alien life. The Fermi Paradox states that there’s a high probability of intelligent interstellar travel-capable alien life occurring in the Universe, so where as they? Kova Rimor, a space mercenary who discovers a strange beacon when her ship crash lands on an uninhabited alien planet may soon discover the answer to that question…
As well as offering a mature and intriguing sci-fi narrative, Kova promises beautiful 2D visuals, three factions to join (each with their own perks), upgradable skills and equipment, side-missions and FPS inspired controls that will allow players full control of aiming and trajectory. The current Pre-Alpha Demo build (available to all backers of the Kickstarter) offers a small 20 minute(ish) teaser of things to come. There’s not a lot of action at the moment, but it really impresses with its bleak and beautiful visual style, intuitive UI, strange alien landscape and tense atmosphere.
It’s still early in development but Kova certainly shows a lot of promise – a gorgeous metroidvania RPG adventure with a compelling narrative that looks set to answer one of life’s biggest mysteries – is there anybody out there? But judging by the lifeform you come across in this trailer, maybe we’re better off alone anyway!
