Now there’s a fair amount to take in here, folks, but it’s worth it so stick with us. Legends of Callasia plays out like the intimidating love-child of Civilization V, Heroes of Might and Magic and Risk. After choosing a hero from a handful of different fantasy backgrounds and races such as The Hundred Kingdoms, The Faeborne and The Revenant, you’ll be presented with the ‘board’ – a map serving as a veritable buffet of land, just itching to be grabbed.
Of course, you’re not the only one eyeing the area though, and opposing factions (be them AI or online players) also plan to take it for themselves. As you move your hero(es) across the map, capturing territories, hiring units and garnering a larger, more threatening army with every turn, your enemies are doing the same. You’ll need to capture, build, upgrade, harvest and defend your land as you go in order to defeat your opponents and ultimately take control of the entire kingdom. Oh and there’s card drops too, offering unique buffs and special abilities – often vital to your success, to be burned along the way.
Now this all might sound a little daunting, but part of what makes Legends of Callasia so enjoyable is the casual way in which it plays out. This isn’t free to play, it isn’t plastered with ads and cool down timers and other stress inducing f2p elements we’ve become accustomed to. It’s slick, easy to learn and quick to play, making it a perfect choice for those looking for a deep strategy experience similar to the likes of Risk and or Heroes of Might and Magic, but without having to commit to sinking an entire afternoon each time they play. From what we’ve seen of the open beta so far, Legends of Callasia hits all the right marks and is shaping up to be something really rather special indeed.
