Loopmancer is a beautiful and brutal cyberpunk roguelike action adventure with a Groundhog Day-esque time-loop where you start the day over each time you die.
In Loopmancer you are a detective who has been sent on an assignment to find a journalist who has gone missing. However, it won’t be easy as the streets are crawling with thugs, gangsters and mutants, none of which take kindly to your presence. As you fight your way through the streets, it’s likely that you’ll die more than a few times, and each time you do you awaken in your bed at the start of the same day again.
Each day you awaken the streets are shifted around a little and all of the NPCs continue to react to you as if it’s the first day you’ve been on the assignment (though they do thankfully have different dialogue). It seems it’s only you who knows the time-loop is occurring and you’ll use it to your advantage as you investigate the case and upgrade your character, weapons and equipment.
It is quite a bit too lore heavy early on in the game, but once you get into the second time-loop things really start to pick up. The combat is gloriously fast, fluid and brutal, there’s a nice variety of weapons, abilities and equipment to use and the visuals are stunning. If the devs could condense some of the dialogue sections and make them feel a little less like an info dump, then it could be a classic. Highly recommended.
