We have 1,000 Steam Beta keys to give away for Mind Scanners, a retro-futuristic psychoanalysis game set in a dystopian cyberpunk city where you diagnose and “normalize” citizens.
Previously featured on Alpha Beta Gamer during the closed Beta sign up Mind Scanners is a narrative-driven cyberpunk psychoanalysis game with a touch of Papers, Please. It’s set in the same universe as the Outer Zone games (Fleshworms, The Goat Crone and Cyborg Seppuku), though previous knowledge of the Outer Zone isn’t necessary (it’s a standalone experience).
In the game you take on the role of a Mind Scanner – a government employee who is tasked with diagnosing anomaly citizens and treating them to remove their psychological defects (and their personality). You do this by using a variety of strange gadgets that you have to figure out how to operate and require you complete tricky little minigames. Errors can cost time and stress out your patients so you need to be careful, but you only have a limited amount of time per day so you also need to be fast.
You can be an obedient Mind Scanner and treat everyone you meet, or you can be a bit more selective and let some escape unchanged. The choice is yours, but you must take responsibility for your patients’ actions and how you have affected their quality of life. You may also be contacted by a resistance who are keen to rise up against the government, but you’d better choose your allegiances carefully – you may never see your daughter again if you displease the government!
The Mind Scanners Beta takes about an hour to play through and it’s riveting stuff. Its grim cyberpunk setting has a rich lore, the pixel artwork and the soundtrack are superb, the gadgets are fun to figure out and there are lots of quirky citizens to meet – from a guy who thinks he’s a tree to a psychotic nymphomaniac cat lady. To grab your Steam Beta key just carry out any two actions in the widget below and your key will appear instantly!
