Murder Machine is a fast paced old school run n’ gun first person shooter that sees you taking on the role of a human that’s been transplanted into a robot body.
In Murder Machine you wake up inside a metallic body, you feel numb, you can’t jump, your vision is pixelated and you can’t tilt your head up or down. You’ll have to blast your way through a series of deadly robot-filled levels to find an answer to your predicament, dodging bullets, blasting enemies and using their defenses against them.
The Murder Machine demo features a sizeable chunk of content with a tutorial level and five full levels (plus an unfinished one) to blast your way through. The controls are reminiscent of the original Doom and Wolfenstein 3D games, with fast movement and no way to look up or down. You can still aim your gun up and down though, it’s just that the screen doesn’t move with it.
The gameplay in Murder Machine is also fondly reminiscent of Doom, with fast paced run n’ gun combat, key-cards to collect and powerful weapons to collect. There is a tactical element to the combat too though – with you able to use traps and the exploding bodies of enemy robots against them.
It’s a fun game with cleverly designed levels and gameplay that offers a tactical take on the classic run n’ gun shooter. The disconnect between the vertical aim and the vertical look can take a little getting used to, but it makes for a novel FPS experience and works well with the trapped-in-a-robot-body narrative. Old school FPS fun with some fresh new ideas.
