My Child Lebensborn brings real emotional weight, gorgeous artwork and a meaningful narrative to Tamagotchi-style virtual care games as you’re tasked with taking care of a child who was born as part of the Aryan Master Race breeding program in Germany during WWII.
My Child Lebensborn draws its narrative from true stories of children born during wartime as you take care of a young boy or girl in a Norwegian town during the aftermath of WWII. Your child is a complex character who has some deep seated issues and is the subject of persecution due to the fact that they were born as the result of the Nazi’s Lebensborn program – which saw mostly unmarried mothers encouraged to breed “racially pure and healthy” Aryan children.
You are a single parent with a tight budget, who is now the ward of the orphaned child and must try to take care of them whilst also balancing your cash. The narrative of the game takes around 4-5 hours to play through and will see you trying to nurture the child and work through the difficult social and emotional problems they face. Your child has a complex mood system and will have to face some tough challenges as they overcome their own feelings of guilt and the prejudices of a town that’s still recovering from the emotional and physical scars left by the war.
It’s a beautifully animated and well crafted experience that tackles some very real and complex issues. The child you’re looking after is adorable and full of personality, and it’s not their fault that their blond hair and blue eyes are a constant reminder of the atrocities of WWII.
