Nauticrawl is a unique roguelike Sci-Fi adventure where your sole interaction with the outside world is via the various levers, buttons, wires, wheels and read-out screens on the control console of your vehicle.
The atmospheric pressure of the planet you live on in Nauticrawl is 20,000 times that of our own, so the only way to safely traverse it is from inside large “Nauticrawl Units”. These Nauticrawl Units are crab-like mechanical walkers with a large cockpit and home unit built on top of them (and they can even fly once you power up a zeppelin unit). The Nauticrawl Units are highly coveted and only the super rich can afford them, but you have managed to steal one and are now attempting to escape to the forbidden surface, a land long forgotten by your kind.
At its core Nauticrawl is a roguelike dungeon crawler that’s played through a cockpit simulation interface. This means you’ll never actually see what’s outside the walls of you Nauticrawl Unit for yourself, with you instead using the various readouts and display screens (and a little imagination) to form your own vision of the dangerous world around you.
Working out the many secrets the Nauticrawl Unit holds can be just as important as exploring your environment. It’s a mysterious and very complex machine whose many secrets won’t be revealed all at once. Interestingly, each time you start a new game you’ll take on the role of a different character, but you’ll retain your knowledge of the Nauticrawl Unit and the narrative that you’ve uncovered – guiding you to make more progress with each run.
It’s a great looking game with a fun premise. Viewing the world from your rudimentary console screens not only will make for a unique dungeon crawling experience, but it will allow you to use your imagination to formulate a view of the world.
