Neon Abyss is an awesome 2D roguelike that feels a lot like what The Binding of Isaac would if it was an action platformer set in a Sci-Fi world full of neon gods to dispatch!
In Neon Abyss you battle your way through procedurally generated dungeons, blasting monsters and neon gods as you attempt to find a cure for your immortal curse. The combat is fast and fun, with a nice variety of monsters to blast and responsive controls for your character.
Although the 2D action platformer gameplay is quite different, the design of the dungeons and your stackable upgrades feel fondly reminiscent of The Binding of Isaac. There are tons of cool secrets to discover as you make your way through the dungeons, including rooms you can only enter if you sacrifice a little health, shops and cracked walls that can be blown up to reveal hidden rooms behind. One particular highlight is an area that tasks you with dancing in a nightclub to earn an upgrade.
You start the game with a fairly puny weapon, but as in The Binding of Isaac, there are tons of awesome stackable upgrades to collect – including companions, new guns, gun upgrades, activatable abilities and a vast array of stackable perks. In the full game players will also be able to choose a personalized upgrade path where your choices will change the rules of the game.
The current build of Neon Abyss contains four randomly generated dungeons to make your way through and takes around 30 minutes to complete. It’s a blast from start to finish, with the only issue at the moment being that it is perhaps a little too easy (everybody knows all the best roguelikes are hard as nails). It’s a whole lot of fun though and offers plenty of replayability and cool stuff to discover on each new run. Highly recommended.
