Neon Tail is a stylish open world roller skating game where you take control of a young skater who sets out to save her home city from a dimensional disaster.
Drawing inspiration from Jet Set Radio and the Batman Arkham games, in Neon Tail you take control of a young woman who sets out on an adventure which sees you meeting an extra-dimensional godlike creature, being granted strange powers and saving the Bluepulse City from a dimensional disaster. The current demo build doesn’t feature any of that, but it does allow you to meet a few characters, learn the ropes and go for a skate around a large section of Bluepulse City.
We previously featured in Alpha Beta Gamer back in 2018 and found it to be a very promising game but the imprecise jumping and tiny ‘snap-on’ radius of grinding points made it very hard to play. Thankfully the latest build addresses these issues and it makes for a much more enjoyable experience.
It’s still far from feature complete, but the thriving, neon-filled Bluepulse City is a great place to explore, with lots of fun places to skate, jump and grind off. There’s a nice feeling of momentum to your character, tricks are easy to pull off (and hard to master) and grinds are now easy to pull off and easy to transfer between. There’s lots of verticality to the game world and an expert player could probably traverse the demo area without ever touching the ground.
Fans have been crying out for a decent skating game since the glory days of Jet Set Radio and it looks like Neon Tail is going to answer the call and then some. It’s got style, an intriguing story, a vibrant open game world and excellent skating physics. Lace up your boots, this is gonna be one hell of a ride!
