Night Reverie is a beautiful, heartwarming narrative driven puzzle adventure about a young boy who searches for his sister after being transported to a surreal distorted version of his house.
In Night Reverie you follow the adventure of a young boy called Matt, who is best friends with his little sister and is always keen to make her feel happy and safe. There are suggestions that Matt’s parents are having some problems, which may be affecting him and his sister a little, but on the whole you’re pretty happy and spend your time playing “Night Explorer”, where he pretends to be an adventurer who solves mysteries (such as how to get the cat down from the top of a cupboard).
However, after going to bed after playing Night Explorer, Matt ends up on a real adventure, as he is transported to a strange dreamlike world that is like a distorted version of his own. Matt’s house looks familiar, but also quite different, and the characters he meets are also familiar but very different – such as his cat now being the size of a transit van and everyone being anthropomorphic animals. Matt want’s to find his sister and get back to his real home, but he’s a friendly and helpful soul, so he’ll also help people and make some friends along the way – such as a little fireball called Sparky who follows him everywhere.
The current build of Night Reverie takes around 30 minutes to play through and really impresses with its high quality pixel art animation, heartwarming narrative and charming characters. There’s a wonderful dreamlike Alice In Wonderland/Wizard of Oz quality to the world and it’s a delightfully wholesome experience – it’s a game that’s not about fighting evil monsters, it’s about going on an adventure and spreading a little joy along the way. Highly recommended.
