Occlusion is a very stylish and claustrophobic feeling hardcore precision platformer in which you make your way through pitch black levels, lit only by the small perimeter of light that surrounds you and the glow of a few little light pets that you collect on your way to the exit.
The gameplay in Occlusion draws favourable comparisons to Super Meat Boy, with you playing a little cubic character that must run, jump and wall jump their way to the exit of each level. As well as making it to the exit in one piece you also have to collect little firefly-esque ‘light pets’ which help guide your way and will unlock the door to the exit.
The levels in Occlusion are devilishly tough, thanks to the challenging level design and the fact that you can’t see very far ahead of you – making each level a tricky exercise that will test your platforming skill and your memory as you attempt to remember where the deadly hazards are (and there are plenty). You’ll die a lot, but it’s always due to your own ineptitude, and you’re nicely reminded of all your mistakes once you complete a level, thanks to the blood red ‘death ghosts’.
Occlusion is still very early in development but it certainly shows the makings of a very stylish and addictive precision platformer. The art style is a particular highlight, making for a very foreboding and claustrophobic atmosphere in which you’re always unsure of what’s just out of sight in the darkness. Deliciously dark and deadly hardcore precision platforming.
