Out of Range is an atmospheric first person Sci-Fi puzzle adventure which sees you trying to find your way off a mysterious deserted island your flying ship crash landed on.
Created by students at ENTI University in Barcelona, in Out of Range you take on the role of a hauler who lives in a city above the clouds and pilots a flying ship. Unfortunately for you you’ve crash landed on an island somewhere in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean. The island seems to be abandoned but it’s full of strange technology which may help you find some way to activate a comms link and escape.
It takes around 45 minutes to play through Out of Range and it features a nice mixture of exploration, exposition and puzzle solving. The fog-enshrouded island is a big place and it’s packed full of detail and interesting things to discover, the most intriguing of which is the huge lighthouse that towers over the surrounding area.
A little more narrative would be nice, but on the whole It’s a very well crafted adventure with cleverly designed puzzles and a great sense of atmosphere. A lot of work has clearly gone into the environmental design as the island is incredibly well constructed and the rusting metal husks of machinery that fill it really do look like they’ve been there for decades. It’s packed full of great little details and the fog that surrounds it gives it an eerie beauty. It’s a little reminiscent of Dear Esther, but with a grim Sci-Fi narrative and puzzles to solve. Highly recommended.
