POOM is an incredible DOOM Demake created within the 8-bit constraints of the PICO-8 fantasy console!
Created for 7dfps 2020, POOM manages to take everything that’s great about DOOM and the squish it into the tiny confines of the PICO-8 virtual console. For those unaware the PICO-8 is essentially supposed to be about as powerful as a NES, has a 128×128 pixel resolution and should support a total of 256 8×8 sprites. So it’s best suited to simple 2D games – playing a passable version of DOOM on it should be impossible. But as we all know by now, DOOM finds a way!
POOM features six large levels, four classic DOOM weapons, four enemy types and a big final boss fight. It’s also rocking an excellent chip-tune remake of the original DOOM soundtrack and well designed levels complete with lots of secrets to discover.
It takes around 45 minutes to play through POOM and it’s a perfect little bite-sized demake of id’s classic. The PICO-8 console is good but can it play DOOM? You bet your ass it can!
