Primal Light is a challenging old school action platforming adventure where you control a weird blue musclebound creature who fights his way through a fleshy monster-filled world.
In Primal Light you take control of Krog, a mysterious blue creature with a powerful punch and a sturdy red loincloth, who must fight his way through large levels filled with traps, enemies and secrets, then dispatch the powerful bosses at the end of them. The gameplay and visual style of the game draws inspiration from classic 16 bit action platformers and it doesn’t pull any punches when it comes to difficulty.
The current build of Primal Light features one large fleshy level to make your way through. You start with five lives and each life allows you to top up your health three times – which may sound generous, but death can come very quickly if you’re careless. The level design is tough, but fair, with you only having yourself to blame if you die. Throughout the level there are side paths to discover which offer an extra bit of challenge and can earn you a useful upgrade/passive ability if you succeed.
It’s still early in development, but Primal Light already shows a lot of promise. The excellent pixel art visuals are a little more advanced than the SNES/Genesis could handle, but other than that, playing it feels very much like you’ve stumbled across a long forgotten 16-bit action platforming classic.
