Project Rascal is a fast, vibrant and inventive platformer that’s essentially the perfect 3D Sonic the Hedgehog game in all but name.
It’s no secret that SEGA have struggled to create a truly great 3D Sonic game (and god knows they’ve tried many times). Step forward Project Rascal by Brazilian developer NotSoGreedy (creators of the excellent Sonic GT) – a new platformer that has everything you could ever want from a 3D Sonic game, and more.
In the game you take control of Rascal, an agile little kid from an ancient long forgotten civilization, whose island is under attack by a mysterious individual. Rascal then sets out on an adventure to stop the bad guys’ plans, uncover a mystery involving powerful Shards and save his island.
The current build of Project Rascal features one expansive oceanside level for you to race through and explore. You can get through the level in under four minutes if you rush, but there’s so much to discover and so many different intertwining routes that you’ll want to play it again and again.
It has everything a great 3D Sonic game should have – speed, vibrant visuals, wide open spaces, inventive level design and lots of fun secrets. You can even go surfing and get some big air. There’s a joy and playfulness in the level design that allows you to imagine what a Sonic game made by Nintendo would be like, and it truly is glorious! Sonic fans can finally rejoice – there is a truly great 3D Sonic game on the horizon (it just doesn’t star Sonic). Highly recommended.
