Beta sign ups are now live for Quake Champions, Bethesda’s highly anticipated multiplayer arena based FPS that adds Overwatch-style heroes to the fast paced and brutal run and gun action of the Quake series.
It’s been a long time since the last main entry into the Quake series (Quake 4 was 12 years ago and Quake Live was 7), so it’s great to see the return of the grandaddy of fast paced frag-filled arena shooting. Quake Champions was originally planned as an expansion to Quake Live, but possibly thanks to the critical success of the latest DOOM game it’s now planned as a full release with some interesting new features.
Aside from the lush new visuals, the main difference from previous instalments is the addition of MOBA-esque heroes (the Champions in the title) that you can play as, each with their own unique set of skills. It is a worry that this addition may upset the pure skill based run and gun gameplay of the series, but Overwatch has certainly proved it can be done right and Bethesda have certainly proved they can revitalise a classic FPS franchise with DOOM already (albeit not with the multiplayer). It’s also going to be PC only, so should be able to fully harness the power of modern gaming PCs. The gameplay footage we’ve seen so far already looks like it’s going to be a ton of frag-filled fun anyway, sign up for the Beta now to be one of the first to enter the arena!
